Can teething survive without a teat?

Among pediatricians, at least those belonging to the group of traditionalists, there is an opinion that during teething a classic teat is helpful, which in the child's mouth naturally massages the gums and allows you to reduce pain sensations. For this reason, there is a sincere expression of sympathy for mothers raising a baby without a pacifier. But is that really true? Are parents doomed to teat when teething? And the others are experiencing the tooth eruption process much worse?

The question from the title of the article may be a bit surprising. However, when we realize how many myths, stereotypes and wrong judgments accompany raising children. We look at the problem a bit wider. Let's start from the beginning. Let's take a look at what teething is, when it starts and how to deal with it.

Teething not so scary ...

Teething is undoubtedly a difficult time in the life of every parent. Often combined with tearfulness and irritability, and with sleepless nights.

When does teething start? Is it when many people look for symptoms, i.e. around the age of three months, or maybe later? According to doctors, teething, i.e. the eruption of milk teeth, usually begins around the fourth-sixth month of life and lasts until the second-third year of life. Initially, incisors (eight teeth) come out of the child, then the first and second molars.

There is an opinion that the most painful is the period of eruption of the first teeth. Over time, teething is expected to be much milder. Maybe this is because the child gets used to the changes taking place in his mouth, and parents know how to deal with difficult situations and are calmer?

Equally often you can hear that it is especially painful eruption of fangs in children. Each time, however, all these opinions and courts should be treated very individually. Teething process can be different in every baby.

Teething symptoms in infants

How do you know if your child is starting to teethe? The most common symptoms are:

  • loose gums,
  • profuse saliva,
  • tearfulness, irritability, anxiety,
  • apathy,
  • less desire to eat - and in breast-fed mothers frequent and short feeding interrupted by crying,
  • feverishness
  • apathy or excessive agitation
  • looser, more frequent stools (diarrhea) or on the contrary: constipation
  • vomiting,
  • allergy-like skin changes.

Returning to the pacifier ...

The opinion of some pediatricians may be misleading. It is not said at all that a baby with a teat in his mouth will go through teething more easily. There are many different accessories on the market that help the toddler, for example: teethers, toys of different sizes and different textures. The child can be served chilled teethers, but also a wooden spoon, or a traditional carrot from a good source.

One should remember about behavior high degree of hygiene. The child should often wash his hands and wipe leaking saliva, applying cream on his mouth to prevent the development of stomatitis or the appearance of pimples on the skin.

Teething: what to do?

Unfortunately, there is no golden recipe here. Best try different methods. Some children love massaging the gums and are grateful for these types of treatments performed by parents with special finger pads or gauze pads. Other children, on the contrary, show dissatisfaction and lack of consent to such procedures.

They help one baby soothing gels applied to the gums (unfortunately, the minus of such preparations is the fact that they often also soften the gums, which means that when they stop working, they cause even more pain) and the short time of pain relief they provide. For other children, soothing teas, painkillers, or special sprays with local pain relief bring relief.

Cold teethers and toys given to the child to chew are almost always helpful.

Hygiene of first teeth

It is very important hygiene of the first teeth. Already ones require special care. They should be washed with a gauze pad wet in boiled water, which will allow the toddler to prepare for hygienic procedures, especially in the future to brush his teeth. Dentists argue not to wait with this type of care until the day when the first clove comes out, but to start earlier, actually immediately after birth, washing toothless gums with a swab dipped in boiled water or in a chamomile infusion.

When there are more teeth, and actually when there are four, it is worth it buy a brush with soft bristles, specially designed for young children and brush your teeth baby. Preferably after each larger meal and before bedtime.

When to introduce toothpaste? There are already baby products on the market, but most dentists recommend introducing toothpaste around their first birthday. Attention! It should be fluoride pastebecause only such, according to recent reports, is able to protect children from tooth decay.
